On your mind

This is about Audie Murphy. Someone said he was the most decorated man ever in the U.S. Army. I believe he was the most decorated soldier in the Army during World War II, not during the entire history of the Army. I remember him as a first lieutenant, not as Major Murphy.

The town of Huachuca City and a businesses in town both have signs up saying, “We Support our Troops.” But they won’t support the VFW in Huachuca City.

You goofed again today. You have the morning TV guide, but not the evening TV guide. It’s not the first time and it probably won’t be the last.

I have a comment about the new bus station. I work in town running deliveries all over town and pass by the station four to six times a day. Since it has been open I have yet to see anybody sitting or waiting for transit or getting off a bus. I’ve seen three or four buses sitting there but never any riders. I don’t see how they justified $1.6 million to build this using our taxes. Most of all the location doesn’t even make sense.

I appreciate Fire Chief Bill Miller’s attention to the error in the fire district tax rate and for quickly working to fix the error. This is different from the school district. Miller knew the tax rate that was approved and was attentive enough to see that the county published the incorrect rate. The school district miscalculated the tax rate that was used by the county. The school board should investigate: 1) When was the error discovered? and 2) Was there time to fix the error? The budget officer and assistant superintendent knew of the error and failed to notify the School Board for over a year. This shows a lack of leadership and fiduciary responsibility. While the board has a fiduciary responsibility, they do not do the calculations. With no notification of the error, the question becomes: Did the lower tax make fiscal sense at the time? Those of us who noticed the lower 2006 tax rate assumed it was based on the number of new homes being built. The increased value of homes also could have led to a lower tax rate in 2006. I agree with Jack Blair that severe actions should be taken within the district, but disagree with a call for the school board to be recalled or to resign.

" AUDIE MURPHY YES HE WAS THE MOST DECORATED SOLDIER. ARE YOU JEALOUS? LEE DOYLE EDITOR'S NOTE: Joe Hooper was the most decorated soldier in the Vietnam War, earning more decorations than World War II's Audie Murphy or World War I's Sgt. Alvin York. Hooper was awarded 35 medals, including the Congressional Medal of Honor, two Silver Stars, six Bronze Stars and eight Purple Hearts. He was credited with killing 115 North Vietnamese, but the number was probably higher. "

" LOL: True, though judging by the quality of the SV Herald's online content they don't atually have a copy editor. "

" I agree about the columnists. It really doesn't do them a good turn to ignore the problem because they might be discouraged or their feelings may be hurt or whatever the issue is. In the end, they will not be able to get a job (and/or keep it) if they think their work is good enough and they are unable to listen to constructive criticism. Please don't do these young people such a disservice. If they are unable to improve, it's best to discover this now so they can move on to other things for which they are better suited. "

" By the looks at most of the article comments being made here on line Buena H.S. doesn't have a very strong English department or an effective teaching method. I have never seen so many illiterates on a forum in my life. As for young columnists, I have emailed critiques in the past and received the most defensive, unprofessional responses I have ever seen. I simply wrote it off as inexperience. But ya’ll really need a better proof reader. "

" bbs senior, You sure shouldn't be critiquing the letters on here with your inability to use the English language, punctuation, captilization, etc. If you wrote an article, the proof reader would be busy for most of the day, making corrections. "

" your two teen columnists need to pay more attention in english class. these articles are poorly written. there is no sentence fluency or organization.they lack creativity and and good word choice.I would think these articles would be edited better but maybe they are afraid to "hurt the girls' feelings." I think it's time for some new, fresh writers. Is anyone else with me? EDITOR'S NOTE: If you are interested in writing for the Herald/Review, contact Keith Allen at keith.allen@svherald.com. "
