To the Editor:
I am writing this open letter to express my disappointment to the Sierra Vista mayor and the committee in the selection of the candidates to be interviewed for the vacant City Council position. I am saddened Rudolph Wilson Sr. was not among the five individuals chosen. All levels of our government should reflect the population it serves. I also believe the city missed an opportunity to select a highly qualified citizen who would have served our city with distinction.
While I am shocked and disappointed, I am not surprised when I survey the history of our nation. Our Constitution is a model for others to imitate to uphold the theme that values “all men are created equal.” However, I am reminded what Sen. Barbara Jordan said, “When the Constitution was written it didn’t include me because I was not considered a man.” In 1903, W.E.B. DuBois said, “the problem of the 20th century is the problem of the color-line.” With the events of our nation’s past and the events of today, the window of “justice” sometimes appears foggy.
Sometimes the flesh rules over the intended spirit. Therefore, Mr. Mayor, if I am “off-the-mark” with my feelings on this issue, I ask your forgiveness and for the Creator to create in me a clean heart. However, if I am correct — and only you and the Creator know — I ask you and your selection committee to apply justice in all your future deliberations.
