Change is needed on immigration, leadership

To the Editor:

It’s about 5:50 a.m., and I hear the harsh sounds of the Border Patrol helicopter heading off toward the Huachuca Mountains, most likely after another band of illegal immigrants, the politically correct term the paper insists on using to describe the constant traffic from across the border. This is because true investigative reporting is as illusive as the guts it takes to keep the public informed. According to recent news reporters and accounts in the Herald, the illegals coming across the border are involved in drug trafficking, human smuggling and other more than despicable criminal activities indicating the true nature of the type of individuals seeking “work” in the United States.

Most, if not all, have criminal records in Mexico and are coming here to ply their trade. They are willing to assimilate? They understand and care about the history of legal immigration to this country. They understand what Ellis Island means to so many of our immigrants.

I do not think that most of these individuals know where New York is or, for that matter, what the Statue of Liberty means to citizens of this country. They steal our identities, take our jobs and commit crimes only to run back to Mexico to hide. These are just the type of law-abiding people we want as citizens.

An Australian citizen wrote an editorial concerning vocal legal immigrants that were trying to force their religion and beliefs on the citizens of Australia (Islam, etc.) and I quote: “This is our country, our land and our lifestyle, and we will allow you to enjoy all of this. But once you are done complaining, whining and griping about our flag. Our pledge, our Christian beliefs or our way of life, I highly encourage you to take advantage of one other great Australian freedom: ‘the right to leave.’ If you are not happy here, then leave. We did not force you to come here. So accept the country that accepted you.”

This should be our own mantra. Congress, greedy big business and others should be ashamed and stop trying to get amnesty through the back door. Enforce the laws on the books, and they will go home. Frankly, it is getting hard to be a proud American with all the scandals, and lack of government this administration has demonstrated over and over again. We have illegals demonstrating and parading our streets with Mexican flags, usually encouraged by the children of illegals who enjoyed all our rights, schools, freedoms and jobs, i.e. Maria Elena who writes the editorials you so proudly publish and the flourishing television stations such as Telemundo that help the Hispanics “assimilate” in their own language.

We did this for all the immigrants before the illegals. We, as a nation, need to demand change. Vote them all out in 2008. We need a government of the people and for the people.

" Ms Hayes, you took the words right out of my mouth. We need so many more people writing to our Congressmen and elected officials. As for illegal immigrants, they do not have the option if you don't like it here leave. They must be deported. Illegal is illegal no matter what. Thank you again for your thoughts and words. "
