Morning Coffee With … is a weekly feature about your neighbors. If you’d like to share information about yourself, answer the same questions and e-mail to svhnews@transedge.com, or look for the ad running in the Herald/Review.

Name: Mary Foley

Address: Sierra Vista

Occupation: Student at Buena High School

How long have you lived in this area? All 14 years of my life!

In one word, how would you describe this area? Beautiful

To what clubs/church do you belong? St. Andrew’s Church

What are you good at? Being myself. Not a lot of people can do that.

What is your favorite childhood memory? I still consider myself a child, and my favorite memories are still coming!

What are my favorite sports team? Green Bay Packers and Arizona Diamondbacks

What are your favorite films? “Star Wars” and “Where The Heart Is”

What inspires you? Music

What kind of personality traits do you admire in a person? Nice, sense of humor, not a pushover.

You’re making us dinner. What would you serve? Lunchables. Tasty.

I’m most happy when … I’m with my best friend, Tori.

If you had enough money to donate, what charitable would you support and why? The manatees! I’d support them because a lot of people don’t know what the heck they are! Plus, they’re in danger from motorboats. Poaching is also occurring.

If you could change one thing about the community you live in, what would it be and why? More places for the younger crowd to go to. The mall gets boring after a while.

How do you hope people remember you? As a person with morals and values.

Describe your perfect cup of coffee. I don’t drink coffee. In the morning, I prefer grape juice or a refreshing Capri Sun Surfer Cooler.

" So SV HERALD I see you keep posting our comments. This is obviously an issue that you could be reporting on to get these young Sierra Vista community members some support. Where's the headline "Sierra Vista Youth Needs A Place To Their Selves"...or something to that effect, you get the point. I'm waiting to see it.... or should I say hoping to see it. "

" solidox, I somewhat agree with most of what you said, but I do want to bring your attention to the comment I submitted earlier. It IS the responsibility of the city's Parks and Leisure department since they posted a mission statement that stated it was a part of their commitment to this community! http://www.ci.sierra-vista.az.us/cms1//index.php?option=com_content&task=section&id=24&Itemid=174 "

" KE has a point in saying it's not the public/city's responsibility to provide recreational outlets for anyone. nevertheless, if you consider the effects of never working as a community to make recreational outlets, you should realize what you'll have ended up creating for your town: socially mal-adjusted, terminally bored kids who will have no desire to work for and with their town. i should know, i've turned out this way as a result of having lived here so long with nothing to do. come on, a couple more parks, clubs, activity centers etc won't kill us. "

" I agree one hundred percent. I dont go out that much mainly because there is nothing to do other than go to the movies and I dont want my brain to rot away by watching tons and tons of movies. I also think it is amazing that a small setance, such as my friend Mary wrote, sparked up something as big as this. I think even she was caught off gaurd by this. "

" You ALL need to bring these same exacts comments up at the City Council Meetings!! They're open to public comment and these are the people who you elected. Make them work for you and listen to you! Pick a meeting date, go down to City Hall, and stand up for what you say you believe in! The more, the better. Get all the high school kids down there too. There's power in numbers. It's time that the citizens and taxpayers took control of where this City's future is headed!! "

" KE, being a freshman in high school, it's hard to see my friends. The only place I can see them for more than half an hour is outside of school, or the 'hang out' spots. Don't get me wrong, I do stay home and talk with my family, but I still need to get out every once in a while. All "Hanging Out" spots aren't trouble- but the people that are there. I don't hang out with bad people. "

" KE, with a vast majority of the families that live in this area that have both parents working outside fo the home, it’s a bit hard for their young ones to find safe and healthy places to go during after school hours if they do not have anywhere within their community to go to. My daughter goes to the Boys & Girls Club.If it wasn’t for them, my daughter would be a “latch key kid”, and I don’t want that for her. When I was growing up in this town, there wasn’t much either... "

" Also...(sorry just thought of this) I wonder if Mary Foley has come back to her article and seen the issue she has raised. Maybe she could get some fellow young adults involved to finally get somewhere with this issue. Obvioulsy she has community support!! "

" Categorize..: Very well said!! Like I said I really hope someone (Perhaps Parks & Leisure Sevices) reads these comments. Or better yet maybe the newspapaer can forward them to the city!! I keep returning to this article to see how interesting the comments are getting. Despite KE's seemingly deismissive comments this should be a city issue and I think Categorize proved that well! ***SV HERALD THIS IS OBVIOUSLY AN ISSUE YOU COULD REPORT AND HELP ON!!??*** "

RJ wrote on Sep 13, 2007 10:35 AM:

" Further, this city needs an environment where kids can have fun yet still be monitored by adults, which is something only the city would likely have the funds, employees, and volunteers to set up. If I was still under age I can't think of any new places to hang out or even go to have fun outside my own house (actually there are even less places now than when I was a kid). "

" KE, I believe the city has a group of people known as the Parks and Leisure department and last I checked, " Parks and Leisure Services is committed to improving the quality of life of all Sierra Vista residents by providing a wide variety of recreational, cultural, educational, and entertainment activities." So I guess it WOULD be the responsibility of the city since that's what they are apparently striving for! "

" I agree with Mary. Though I am only 21 I think that there should be more to do for people age 16-20. For the longest time there was only one thing for me to do and that was go to the mall. I wanted to do things such as play pool or go bowling. No pool after Rack-Um shut down (because the bars were 21+) and bowling on Fort was always crowded. I think this town needs a place where kids can hang and do things without worring about drinking or drugs and parents know their children are safe. "

KE wrote on Sep 12, 2007 8:11 AM:

" Food for thought....When did it become the city's responsibility to provide activities for the young people? Where are the homes? Where are the families? There is plenty to do at home to prepare young people for adulthood. 'Hanging out' spots are often a spawning ground for trouble. "

" Sierra Vista definitely needs to support the younger folks. This includes kids who are still in school as well as those who have graduated college. Let's invest in the youngest components of our community and make the future of Sierra Vista better and more meaningful, something that goes beyond a mall. It's no wonder kids start doing drugs, have children too early, or move away. It is as if we teach young folks they are worth nothing. Let's give 'em a chance! "

Younger Generation Supporter wrote on Sep 11, 2007 4:13 PM:

" After checking back to see if anyone else had commented, I only hope someone from the city is reading these comments in support of Mary on this issue that has been a CITY PROBLEM for many many years. Good luck on getting something. I would love to see our youth be FINALLY supported. "

" How nice to read your column. Very good work. Wouldn't it be fun to have you and your friends have tea with the "older generation" someday? I'm sure the city of SV could accommodate an occassion like that. A good place to exchange ideas. With our age differences, we could all learn from each other. A lot of folks here live far away from grandchildren. Good luck to you. "

RJ wrote on Sep 10, 2007 11:33 AM:

" Yes! to what Younger Generation Supporter, Ms. Schilling and Mary said. Kids these days still have about the same number of places to hang out that I did when I was a kid here (except now you have a mall...how lucky!). We could do with fewer chain restaurants and more places to hang out that don't involve a bar (i.e. a safe place that kids would be welcome at). The skate park you folks have been promising for years might be a good start...just a thought... "

" I have lived here since I was a baby, 43 years ago. There never has been a lasting thing or things for the youth here to do for very long. Some reason or politician always finds reasons for getting rid of stuff for kids. Seems the old folks who don't like kids have always have gotten their way. Sorry about that. "

Ms. Schilling wrote on Sep 10, 2007 12:37 AM:

" Wow! It sure makes me feel old to see my former 1st and 2nd graders in high school now. Mary, it seems you have done well for yourself and should be proud,I'm proud of you. You make a good point, one that I have been interested in for quite some time. There isn't enough to do for young people in Sierra Vista. I hope city officials can change that in the near future. "

Younger Generation Supporter wrote on Sep 8, 2007 9:50 AM:

" You know for the longest time you have heard over and over an outcry for "more places for the younger crowd to go." When is the city going to get off there duff and do something for the younger crowds of Sierra Vista. This was a problem when I was a teen years ago and is still a problem today. All this growth and our teens are still being ingnored year after year after year. It's sad. "
