Parents have role in school

Published/Last Modified on Sunday, Jul 29, 2007 - 05:09:43 am MST

School is right around the corner.

And if you didn’t know this, you can find out in today’s Back to School section in the Herald/Review.

In it, you’ll find information about various programs that are being offered at local schools. You’ll also gain perspective for the new school year.

For parents of children getting ready to start their studies again, we think this annual resource is a reminder of not only the important role that schools play in our communities, but also the important role parents should play in their children’s educational lives.

Parents are an important element in making sure their child succeeds. This comes through making sure a child eats well before and during school time. They also help their child with homework, and can continue to help their child by reading to them at home and continuing learning practices.

And while some people homeschool their child, participating on a much more intense way in their child’s life, those who have their children in public and charter schools shouldn’t think they have any less responsibility. Parents and guardians should feel they can ask their child’s teacher how they can be active in the classroom and how they can help their child be a better learner. That’s what parent-teacher conferences are for.

Parents play an important role in preparing their children for success in the classroom and life.

" Please don't stop there. Our kids today need a lot more involvement and participation from the parents then when we went to school. We have asked to volunteer; we have even offered to donate items and equipment to help the local school. Parents really need to step in and really get involved in their children’s lives. Take over at home for what the school district can no longer offer. Be concerned of your child’s attitude and enthusiasm. "
