SIERRA VISTA — An injured illegal immigrant was rescued by an air rescue in the Huachuca Mountains facilitated by the Cochise County Search and Rescue Team and an Arizona Department of Public Safety Ranger helicopter on Wednesday afternoon.
At about 12:50 p.m., county authorities received a request from the U.S. Border Patrol for assistance with a man who had fallen in a canyon on the south side of the Huachuca Mountains, Cochise County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Carol Capas said Thursday.
County rescue volunteer Raul Limon said rescuers rigged the helicopter for rappelling, and the DPS dropped off a medic with the man, high up in a canyon.
The helicopter later returned and picked up the medic and the patient.

Because of foul weather, the DPS helicopter had to land at an alternate site, Limon said.
Rescue personnel and the medical helicopter had to hurry to catch up with the DPS helicopter at the alternate landing spot for the patient transfer at about 5:30 p.m., Limon said.
The man was taken to University Medical Center in Tucson for treatment of serious injuries he suffered when he fell, Capas said.
The type of injury the man suffered was not released.
Border Patrol agents told Sheriff’s Office personnel they came into contact with a group of illegal immigrants who told the agents one of their members had fallen and was badly injured, Capas said. The tip led them to the injured man.
