ALAMOSO, Colo. — A former Buena Colts three-sport athlete set a new conference championship record and broke a 29-year-old school record in a fourth one recently.
Adams State College sophomore Wayne Durham, who is also an All-American kicker for the football team, set Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship and school records in the decathlon.
On May 7 at Rex Stadium on the ASC campus, he scored 6,939 points, which was also an NCAA automatic qualifying score. Durham broke the previous record of 6,880 points, set by Alan Stahlecker in 1978. Durham finished third in the javelin with a throw of 52.92 meters, as the Grizzlies won the meet in both the men’s and women’s team events.
On Thursday through Saturday in Charlotte, N.C., on the Irwin Belk Complex, at Johnson C. Smith University, Durham will compete in the NCAA Division II Championships. His point standing ranks him fifth in Division II this season.

Durham ran the 100-meter dash in a fourth-place time of 11.26 seconds, the 400 in a winning mark of 49.35 seconds, the 110 high hurdles in 16.15 and the 1,500 in 4 minutes, 35.75. He also won the long jump with a leap of 7.07 meters, the shot put in 12.21 meters and was second in the high jump (1.88). He pole vaulted 3.55 meters, and a winning discus throw of 36.52 meters.
