Aug. 19, 1918 — May 15, 2007

Martha Walker lived a long full life and left her Bisbee, Ariz., home on Mother’s Day, after suffering a massive stroke. Martha died gently at the Copper Queen Community Hospital on Tuesday, May 15, 2007, attended by loving caregivers and friends.

She was born on Aug. 19, 1918 in Sonora, Kentucky, the daughter of Emmett and Willie Lou Tabb and sister of William Tabb. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Marvin Earl Walker and her grandson, Douglas Walker Hoener.

Martha will be remembered with love by her daughters, Linda Walker Sanning (Chris Carroll), Susan Walker Hoener (Tom Hoener) and their children, Geoffrey Sanning (Laura Sanning), Lee Sanning (Jamison Pike Sanning) and Gregory Hoener and Erin Hoener; and by her great-grandchildren David and Elyssia Sanning.

Martha graduated from William Jewell College in Springfield, Ohio, where she met Marvin, her husband and lifetime partner of 57 years.

In their early years together, while Marvin served in the U.S. Army Air Corps, Martha worked for the U.S. Army Ferring Division and received a civilian War Commendation for the reports she wrote which were sent all the way up the chain of command to General Patton.

After the war years, Martha and Marvin made their home and many cherished friends in Cincinnati, Ohio, where Martha was an active member of the Westwood Woman’s Club, serving as president of the garden department, an avid bridge player and volunteer in both the Cincinnati Public Schools and in Planned Parenthood.

Her flower arrangements often graced invitational floral events, including exhibits at the Cincinnati Art Museum and the dedication of the Cincinnati Skywalk and won many blue and best of show ribbons in Cincinnati flower shows which led to her accreditation as a national flower show judge.

In 1981, Martha and Marvin moved to Bisbee and built Bisbee’s first solar home along with architect Brian Lockhart and local craftsmen.

Martha was a frequent volunteer at the Miner’s Museum, an active member of the Bisbee’s Woman’s Club, P.E.O., numerous bridge groups and a potter at Cochise County Community College.

She continued to share her flower arranging talent in Bisbee on behalf of friends, the Bisbee Woman’s Club, P.E.O. and Cochise College. Martha made beauty in her flower arrangements and her pottery and helped all to see beauty in the world.

A memorial service will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, May 25, 2007, at The Bisbee Woman’s Club immediately followed by a reception in the same location. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Bisbee Woman’s Club — For the Love of Music, P.O. Box 1743, Bisbee, AZ 85603.

This ongoing music series grew out of a successful effort the Walkers helped orchestrate to restore the Woman Club’s antique Chickering piano to concert condition. Arrangements are being handled by the Dugan Funeral Chapel.
