It will take the Republican Party a long time to dig its way out of its self-imposed morass. Unfortunately it won’t be able to stop digging the hole even deeper for some time. Their fate is tied up with an Iraqi government that has yet to meet a single benchmark set by President Bush. It is ironic that the Democrats are coming to their rescue by pushing the Iraqi government to meet their benchmarks. The price of virtually no oversight has guaranteed them short term gains but a long term disaster as all of the corruption and governmental management incompetence comes out in a steady drip in hearing after hearing. The chickens have come home to roost.
I just wondered if the editor on Wednesday knows the difference between insulin for diabetes and insulation, which is what they called it.

The May 2 Herald displayed a classic example of The Associated Press’ slanted reporting. On Page A7, in a three-column long AP article (15 paragraphs), “Officials caution reports that al-Qaida leader in Iraq is dead,” we learned in the very last paragraph: “More than 200 Sunni sheiks in Anbar province have decided to form a political party to oppose al-Qaida.” This is very significant news, deserving of a headline. Now on Page A8, in another AP article, we read the grabbing AP headline, “Mortar rounds hit Green Zone again.” Obviously The AP prefers to concentrate on sensationalized news like mortar rounds and body counts and buries a highly significant event, like 200 Sunni sheiks turning against al-Qaida in the very last paragraph of a long article. That is slanted reporting. And slanted reporting is a form of deception. Over and over, one can detect deception in news reported about Iraq by major wire services, like The AP and New York Times, that have a political agenda.
Thanks to the young people who stopped and helped us pick up the block we lost on the highway last Saturday on April 28. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

I don’t think bars are public places, they are private businesses. They provide a service that no one needs. Of course, we all need to be protected from ourselves that is the real argument of our would-be protectors. Society will benefit and we will be a better people if everyone is forced to quit smoking. Also, no one has to work in these places, just as they don’t have to work in a slaughter house, coal mine, etc. This was originally the idea of the father of 20th-century smoking bans, the first person to ban smoking in public places, and put “sin taxes” on tobacco to discourage its use. I think that man would be proud, those who today have convinced the majority of the voting public, that society is greater than the rights of the individuals who make up that society. That person was of course none other than Adolf Hitler. Brilliant.
Being they took away the drop off-site for newspapers at Safeway, I think the Herald should sponsor a convenient site to drop off papers for recycling. The Herald generates over 50 percent of my trash, which has me considering not renewing my subscription. It would be interesting to know, how many tons of newspaper are distributed each day by the Herald.
EDITOR’S NOTE: Due to space limitations and safety issues, we can’t provide a drop-off site for the public’s use. All newsprint used to produce the Herald/Review is 100 percent recycled. Any waste generated is stored and hauled by a Tucson firm to a recycling newsprint plant in Snowflake, Ariz. The average page count of the Herald/Review for April was 32 pages. Based on that assumption, we use about 1.5 tons of recycled newsprint a day. The city of Sierra Vista has a pick-up recycling program. For information, call city hall at 458-3315.
My morning routine involves working your daily sudoku puzzle. The four star rated one on May 4 was the easiest one ever. It only took one second to solve. Personally, I like more of a challenge.
EDITOR’S NOTE: Due to an editor’s error, the answers instead of the puzzle were published. We apologize. The correct puzzle ran in the May 5 edition, with the answers, too.
We find it extremely questionable that Pat Call, member of the Cochise County Board of Supervisors, is running for a position on the Pueblo del Sol Village I Home Owners Association Board. Mr. Call is now in a position where he can be part of the decision making process affecting this area. As a member of the PDS board his decisions could be influenced when making decisions on the county board and vice versa.
EDITOR’S NOTE: We checked with Pat Call, and, yes, he’s running for a position on the association after someone asked him to volunteer.
I received an explanation of benefits from my healthcare company. On it was a charge of an office visit of $133: $35 for the injection (which turned out to be nothing more than the cost of a hypodermic needle) and $30 for the drug administered. I would like to know if anyone else finds $35 for a hypodermic needle ridiculous? And isn’t it time we did something about these outrageous charges?
A lot of people are really upset about a Border Patrol agent killing an illegal for throwing rocks at him. Need I remind somebody: What is it that David slew Goliath with? A rock. And if you don’t think a rock is a weapon, consider this: a rock weighs between 3-15 pounds. Over that is a boulder and under that is a stone. And all throughout history man has killed animals and people with rocks.
This town needs at least five more plumbers. We have many new houses and nobody to take care of the plumbing.

To the older couple exiting the clinic at 155 Calle Portal on Friday, May 4, at approximately 3:15 p.m. and driving a light green Subaru Forester: I am quite disgusted with your rude behavior. I cannot believe you shouted at me and my 8 1/2 month pregnant wife to leave our 22 month old daughter in her carseat and get out of your spouse’s way so you could get in your car. Did it ever occur to you that all you needed to do was wait 30 seconds for us to get our child out of the car? I pity you both for your lack of manners, being totally oblivious to your surroundings and too lazy, too ignorant or too stupid to walk around the other side of the car to get in the driver’s seat. It was irresponsible for you to peel out of the parking lot that joins a neighborhood with children in the manner that you did. I still respect my elders, but I think you need some serious help.
I believe both Cheney and Bush need to be impeached immediately! Enough damage has been done and it escalates as we speak. There is clear abundant evidence of grave and serious crimes, from high international crimes to your garden varieties. How can we go on as a fair and just society if we cannot be just and fair? Impeachment is fair and just.
This newspaper reported a while back about the high prices of gas and that the reason was because we don’t have an oil refinery here in Arizona. Well, you also reported that one was being built in Yuma, Ariz. Is this true?
EDITOR’S NOTE: According to an early May Associated Press report, a judge has issued a temporary halt to the planned $3.7 billion project. The Quechan Tribe filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court that claims the federal government did an inadequate environmental review of artifacts and cultural resources before transferring the land. The tribe says it will not oppose the refinery once steps are taken to protect its interests.
