St. David

Friends of the San Pedro River will lead a bird walk near St. David on Saturday. Participants should meet at the Holy Trinity Monastery at 8 a.m. for this moderately difficult four-mile walk. Beginning birders are welcome, and the fee is $5 per person. Bring drinking water and be prepared to get your feet wet. All money goes to support educational programs of the Friends of the San Pedro River. Call 459-2555.

Bisbee

The Bisbee Coalition for the Homeless Inc. will distribute commodities today, from 2 to 3 p.m., at the Esperanza Resource Center, located at 509 Romero St. in Tintown. Chiricahua Community Health Center will provide blood pressure checks, blood sugar screening, vaccines for adults and over-the-counter medications. Call 432-7839.



There will be an AARP driver safety program course offered on Saturday at Bisbee Senior Center, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Martin McKinley is the instructor. Call 432-3314 or 378-0732.

Sierra Vista

Members from the Widowed Support Center are planning a trip to Amerind Foundation on Saturday. The group will meet at the Center at 9 a.m. Transportation will be in a 14-passenger bus. The cost of transportation is one can of food for the Chapel’s Food Bank. Lunch will be at the Triangle T at 12:30 p.m. Call the center at 533-3807 for information or reservations, which are due today.

“Bears of the Huachuca Mountains” will be presented by John Millican will be the topic of today’s meeting of the Huachuca Audubon Society. It will be held at 7 p.m. in Horace Steel Conference Room, Cochise College. Millican is the Arizona Game & Fish regional manager who dealt with dozens of bears coming out of the mountains last summer and fall. Call Kerrie Kirkpatrick at 378-2874.

There will be a Cochise College program about the Apache wars from 12:10 to 1 p.m. Wednesday in Room 313. During the long years of the Chiricahua Apache wars with the United States, the U.S. Army established a number of outposts to block the Apaches’ escape routes into the rugged Chiricahua Mountains. Learn about the history of these camps and join the educators on a field trip to Camps Bonita and Rucker on April 28. Call 515-5446.

Huachuca Mineral and Gem Club will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Room 314, Cochise College. Stan Hoefer, an expert caver and volunteer with the U.S. Forest Service, will speak about some of the 56 significant caves in the Huachuca Mountains, as well as a bit about bats that inhabit those caves. The Southwest Sierra Vista Resident Association will meet at 5 p.m. on Thursday at VFW Post 9972, 549 W. Veterans Drive. All interested persons are invited to attend. Association membership consists of residents from the neighborhoods of Verde Meadows, Villa Del Rio, Garden Canyon Terrace and the Sulger subdivision. The association meets the third Thursday of each month for the purpose of supporting association core programs and to improve our neighborhoods. Membership is free. There will be an interpretive walk led by docents from the Friends of the San Pedro River on Saturday. Walks depart from the San Pedro House at 8 a.m. Call 459-2555.

There will be a Spring Craft Sale on Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Pueblo del Sol Country Club. The sale will feature embellished shirts, gift buckets, apron sets, candles, jewelry, baked goods, quilted items and much more. Call Judy at 378-0312.

Celebrate Earth Day at the Sierra Vista Farmers Market on Saturday at the northwest corner of Wilcox and Carmichael, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Learn about solar cooking, composting with worms and rain water harvesting. A petting zoo includes snakes, tarantulas and pygmy goats. There will be fiddle music by Cochise County Youth Orchestra, The Jones Gang and master hot swing fiddler, David Kaemmer. Recycle 20-ounce soda bottles to fund a community garden. Bring a cooler for fresh produce and healthy meats. There are lots of seeds, starts and plants for your garden. On Saturday, the Huachuca Astronomy Club will commemorate National Astronomy Day and its seventh annual “Telescopes in the Park” by hosting public astronomical viewing at Veterans’ Memorial Park’s Howard Field from 5 to 11 p.m. The public is invited to view through the telescopes and ask questions of club members. There will be views of the planets Saturn and Venus, the Moon and many of its craters along with several very distant celestial objects such as star clusters, nebulae and distant galaxies. This event is free, although donations to support the Huachuca Astronomy Club are encouraged. A raffle will be held for a new Celestron 4.5-inch Telescope. There will be a Victims’ Rights Fair on Sunday at Veterans’ Memorial Park. The event will start at 9 a.m. with 5k run. The fair opens at 10 a.m. with lots of booths, children’s activities, food and music. Train Wreck from Bisbee will perform. The entire event is part of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, which is April 22-28. Daughters of the American Revolution, Tombstone Chapter, centered in Sierra Vista, will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Sierra Vista United Methodist Church. Members will honor Dick and Betty McColley for organizing an annual Christmas airlift of supplies to the Navajo Nation. The regular meeting begins at 10:30 a.m.

The Alzheimer’s Association Desert Southwest Chapter is holding a workshop, titled “Making the day meaningful: A guide to activities” from 1:15 to 2:25 p.m. on April 25 at the Sierra Vista Public Library, 2600 E. Tacoma St.

Paul’s Pub on Paseo San Luis will be the site of the Sierra Vista San Pedro Kiwanis Chili Cook-off on April 28. Tasting cups and raffle tickets will be sold starting at 2 p.m., with an awards ceremony to follow the cook-off. Proceeds will benefit Just Kids Inc., a club foundation. The Sierra Vista Woman’s Club Annual Fashion Show is scheduled for May 5 at the Windemere Hotel and Conference Center. The Hummingbird Stitchers Quilt Guild meets Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m. at the Sierra Vista Community United Church of Christ, which is on the Highway 90 Bypass north of Target. An evening group meets on the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. Programs, workshops, quilting bees and and fellowship. All levels of quilters welcome. The Southeastern Arizona Bird Observatory will band hummingbirds again this year at the San Pedro House. Banding sessions will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, and also on the following dates: April 28, May 5, May 11, May 19, May 26, June 30, July 6, July 13, July 20, July 26, Aug. 4 and Aug. 25. The country of the freedom, country of the peace the country of the no discrimination helping other countries to bring concrete walls down (Germany) when we are building one. Keep in mind that part of our country it was theirs. If we don’t want them to come illegally, why the US embassy give some temporally working visas, so they can come legally and safely to the US to do the job that we don’t want to do. I think that’s why a lot of people around the world hate Americans. "

    " I served aboard the Bisbee from August 1950 until May 1951 as engineer in the Motor Whale boat. She was quite a ship and I have many memories of her and the crew. I was surprised and pleased to see the article on the Plaque and Model Bisbee, AZ is putting up and the ship deserves to be remembered. "
