The Greater Sierra Vista Area Chamber of Commerce is seeking nominations for its “Business of the Year” award. The award recognizes businesses that are members of the chamber which demonstrate exemplary business practices and provide outstanding service to the community. Chamber members should have received nomination forms via e-mail. The deadline for nominations is Friday. Submit nominations by e-mail to membership3@sierravistachamber.org, by mail to 21 E. It’s not too late to register to exhibit your cultural heritage at the Sierra Vista Diversity Fair. The fair, in its second year, is dubbed Greet Yourself, Sierra Vista! and is an opportunity to not only meet people from the many cultures that make our city so vibrant, but also an opportunity to ask questions and learn about the cultures. Exhibitors from the Republic of South Korea, the Philippines, Croatia, Ireland and Japan have already signed up. It is not too late to add your country of heritage to the lineup. Performances will run throughout the event being held April 28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Ethel Berger Center. The Cochise County Chapter of Sisters In Crime will hold its next meeting on April 5 at 7 p.m. at the Cochise College Library. The speaker will be Chris VanHouten, who is a Fort Huachuca firefighter and EMT and also serves as his department’s resident HAZMAT expert. Get informed about what he and others like him have to be prepared for on a day-to-day basis — everything from a pending disaster rolling down the highway to what may be lurking in the air we breathe, or the water we drink. We will get a first-hand look at the tools of his trade and get educated on how the equipment is used. He’ll give us plenty of food for thought, so come with a curious mind and leave armed with solid answers.



The Huachuca Mineral and Gem Club will meet at 7 p.m. today in Room 314 at Cochise College. Tom Roberts will talk about solar energy and biodiesel fuel. He will demonstrate the process of extracting fuel from discarded cooking oil. The public is invited. Call Ingrid Baillie, 459-3718.

The Greater Huachuca Area Democratic Club will hold its annual Golden Awards Banquet on Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Windemere Hotel and Conference Center. The Raging Grannies and the Rickety Rockets will perform. Tickets are $30 per person, including dinner. Call 458-9467.

Huachuca Audubon Society will recycle your old ink jet and laser printer cartridges, as well as old cell phones. It’s been estimated that 400 million cartridges are destined for landfills every year. Instead of trashing your cartridges and cell phones, drop them off at any Huachuca Audubon Society meeting or field trip; or at the San Pedro House, the Nature Conservancy’s Ramsey Canyon Preserve or Wild Birds Unlimited on Highway 92. The Hummingbird Stitchers Quilt Guild meets Wednesdays at 9:30 at the Sierra Vista Community United Church of Christ, which is on the Highway 90 Bypass north of Target. Wednesday’s program will be highlights of the 2007 Quilt show. An evening group meets on the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. Programs, workshops, quilting bees and fellowship. Join parks and Leisure Services on a visit to Fourth Avenue in Tucson on Friday. Visit the many shops and specialty vendors. The cost for this trip is $18. The tour will depart Ethel Berger Center at 8:30 a.m. Lunch will be own your own at one of the many restaurants in the area.

San Pedro Valley Toastmasters, the newest Sierra Vista chapter of Toastmasters International, is having an Open House at 5 p.m. Friday at the Cochise College Library, Room 900. There will be a bird walk at 8 a.m. Sunday at the Sierra Vista Environmental Operations Park, located on Highway 90 between mile markers 342 and 325. Walks are limited to 20 people. Vendor applications are now being taken for the second annual West End Block Party, which will take place from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on April 21 in the historic side of Sierra Vista, on Fry Boulevard from Garden Avenue to North Street. Events will include live entertainment, arts and crafts, a free Kiddie Land, farmers market, Tombstone Vigilantes, clowns, a street dance from 6 to 10 p.m. and much more entertainment, plus lots of food. Last year’s event was such a success that more vendors are expected to participate this year. The Cochise County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue team will hold its monthly meeting on April 5. Meetings are held the first Thursday of the month at the emergency operations building on Foothills and Highway 92. The Fort Huachuca Retiree Council meets at 10 a.m. on the first Friday of each month in the Jack Rabbit Room of the Murr Community Center on Fort Huachuca. Coffee call is at 9:30 a.m. The Retiree Council serves the 4,800 military retirees in Cochise County and other military retirees throughout Arizona by reporting useful information each month. There will be a tour of historic Buffalo Soldier sites on Fort Huachuca every third Saturday of the month for the remainder of the year. The tours will be led by members of the Southwest Association of Buffalo Soldiers in celebration of the post’s designation of 2007 as “The Year of the Buffalo Soldier.”

The Huachuca Audubon Society leads a two- to three-hour bird walk on Mondays at The Nature Conservancy’s Ramsey Canyon Preserve. Meet at the Ramsey Canyon Preserve parking lot, located at the upper end of Ramsey Canyon Road, starting at 8 a.m. in March, and 7:30 a.m. during April and August. The walk will go about a mile up through the preserve at a relaxed pace. There is some uphill walking, and sturdy shoes are recommended. The walk is free and open to the public, but standard preserve entrance fees apply: $5/person for a weekly pass, $3 Nature Conservancy members and Cochise County residents, $25 for a yearly family pass. Cochise Chordsmen Barbershop Singers, which is Sierra Vista’s chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, meets and practices each Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in the choir room of the United Methodist Church, locate at the corner of Buffalo Soldier Trail and St. Andrews Drive.
