MARCH 7

Published/Last Modified on Monday, Mar 19, 2007 - 12:29:39 am MST

On Feb. 9, an article was published concerning the “delisting” of gray wolves in the northern Rocky Mountain States by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. “Delisting” is a governmental euphemism for removing the gray wolf from the endangered species list, so they can be slaughtered. There was an e-mail address given whereby the public could comment on the proposal. That address was wrong. The correct e- mail address is: NRMGrayWolf @fws.gov.

MARCH 9

The bears in the Huachuca Mountains are emerging from hibernation. These are the lucky ones. Eleven other bears were shot to death last year when a shortage in their natural food supply drove them to forage for food in the lower canyons of the Huachucas. This put them in conflict with people who live in these canyons. If food is left out whether intentionally or not, the bears will associate people with food and will become habituated, with deadly and tragic consequences for the bears. A fed bear is a dead bear. I entreat the residents who live in bear country — please secure and lock away all pet and livestock food and take down your bird feeders, for the sake of the bears. If these measures are stringently practiced, a repeat of the tragedy of the shooting deaths of 11 bears can be averted. Please show you care and save a bear.

You figure the gentlemen’s statement in OYM about guarding without ammo. It’s good to see the Army is still up to par. During World War II, I guarded a barracks that was being fumigated with poison signs on the door, I had a 12 gauge with ammo, shoot before they go in and get gassed, make’s sense only in the Army.

Where are my lottery numbers?

Good morning, thank you for the view sections in the paper. I now remember what great people we have in town and at your newspaper. Thanks again.

Oh please, give us one or two days without Giffords being in the newspaper.

Our taxes will be raised due to the water district. The mayor stated it would be beneficial to everyone, but if they’re taking more money out of my pocket how is that beneficial to anyone?

Southwest (Gas) has upped our gas prices 37 percent, and why couldn’t they up the prices slowly.

Our dog suffered severe ear infections and raw feet caused by a yeast infection instead of a “rough” tongue. After giving him filtered water and antihistamine daily instead of water straight from the tap, his problems abated. I would strongly suggest a visit to New Frontier Animal Clinic. The dog may need a series of antibiotics, yeast medicine, lotion and antihistamines to get the problem under control before the filtered water does the trick.

I disagree with the OYM comment that “the war with al Qaeda cannot be won.” I believe it can be won if the country is united on the premise there actually is a war with al Qaeda. Many Americans seem not to believe there is a war. For them the horrors of 9/11 have long dimmed. Democrats seem to believe any war with al Qaeda should be fought only in Afghanistan. They do not seem to recognize the war with al Qaeda is a global war, not only in Afghanistan, but extending into Iraq, Somalia, the Middle East, etc. — wherever al Qaeda terrorists are terrorizing. I believe it can be won if Democrats drop their pre-9/11 concept of war and accept the fact war with al Qaeda is far different and must be fought with entirely different strategies. Democrats must stop treating al Qaeda prisoners as victims and trying to give them the same legal privileges U.S. citizens enjoy under our Constitution. Democrats should stop trying to tie the hands of CIA, NSA and FBI and let them do their important job of gathering intelligence. Democrats should stop trying to micromanage the war and let our military leaders do the job they know best how to do. In a nutshell, if Democrats were more interested in winning the war than the next presidential election, we could be well on our way.

MARCH 10

I continue to be confused by the Democrats who control both houses of Congress. Before and during the November election they kept telling me we need more troops in Iraq. Now that President Bush has increased the number of troops, Democrats oppose him and threaten to cut off funds for the troops. I don’t understand that rationale. Please, Democrats, clarify. It reminds me of Democrats telling me over and over that we never should have gone into Iraq. Yet, every Democrat I have ever heard speak on the subject was elated that a genocidal dictator like Saddam Hussein was removed from power. It also reminds me of the many speeches I heard long before Iraq was ever invaded by President Clinton, Hillary Clinton, John Kerry and so many other notable Democrats calling for the removal of Saddam Hussein and the liberation of the Iraqi people. Now all these notable Democrats are telling me it was wrong to invade Iraq.

It was surprising and refreshing to read that Gov. Janet Napolitano, a Democrat, after being invited by the Department of Defense to visit Iraq, says that the new strategy being employed by General Petraeus seems to be showing positive results and that she supports the increase of troops to Iraq. I wish she would convey that same message to Democrats in Congress and advise them to stop trying to micromanage the war and let Petraeus do the job that the Senate unanimously sent him there to do.

The bears are waking up and will be hungry. Take your bird feeders down so they don’t come looking for food. This could be dangerous for you and the bears. Let’s save the bears. A fed bear is a dead bear.

Great article about the drywall company hiring illegal workers and being raided by ICE. I do not buy the quote from the person who indicated they had to hire illegals because “Caucasians” won’t do the work. My neighbor here in Huachuca City hangs dry-wall for a living and he’s Caucasian. I have done so many years ago myself as well as other Caucasians I know. If Hispanics are the only ones who will hang drywall, great, there a plenty of legal citizen Hispanics who would do the job, so no need to hire illegals. Am a little confused about the issues of possible civil rights or judicial violations for illegals. They are here illegally — are they still protected by the U.S. Constitution? What civil rights do they have? Or is it their civil rights to come here illegally and work and take jobs from legal citizens (Caucasian, Hispanic, Asian, African-American, etc.?) And who really cares what Mexico thinks? Mexico should take care of its own and provide jobs for their people.

The Dunns are irate about the ICE raid. No sympathy here. I am irate at the Dunns and other employers who hire illegals, driving down wages and pocketing the profits. It also makes it hard for a company that follows the rules to compete. Hope this sends a loud and clear message. It was all about the money for them. Even if they don’t get any prison time, they will have to spend some of those profits, on legal counsel, hopefully, at least as much as they pocketed.

Someone asked this past week about the re-routing of the Golden Acres Road around behind the storage place and coming out at the light at McDonald’s on Highway 92 South. I asked the same question a long time ago and it has not been answered yet. That idea was given as a reason for not putting a light at the road years ago, and nothing has happened yet. I guess we are not important enough to warrant a response. I’ve lived here 32 years and have seen many accidents and deaths at the Golden Acres Road.

MARCH 11

About the “raids” on people who hire illegal aliens. The contractors are crying about the need for employees, so they are “forced” to hire undocumented workers. Well, if they would pay a decent wage to U.S. citizens, they would no doubt be able to get the workers they need. It’s all about money for them. Illegals will work for pennies and no benefits but U.S. citizens demand more and they should get it. As for a “guest worker program,” anyone who thinks that will stop illegal immigration has their head in the sand. Why would someone wait in line when all they have to do is get a visitor’s visa or just come across an open border?

Finally the Border Patrol and ICE are getting tough with the people that hire illegal aliens.

This is in reference to the lady who wrote in about the new coins being printed without “In God We Trust.” That was a mistake, and these coins are worth up to $600 on eBay.

At the southern end of the Indian Hills Shopping Plaza (Food City, Big Lots), there is an entrance/exit onto Highway 92 that needs to be re-configured. Currently there are two lanes exiting, one with a turn right arrow on the ground, the other lane with an arrow pointing straight ahead. Alongside the right turn lane, there is a sign prohibiting a left turn onto Highway 92. To me, this says no left turn from the right lane. Nothing says you cannot go straight ahead and then make a left turn to go south on Highway 92. As the arrow on the ground is pointing straight ahead. Many people are getting ticketed because of making a left turn onto Highway 92 by using this left lane of the exit. The city needs to install a barrier to prohibit making a left turn onto Highway 92 as the current situation is confusing. They have a barrier installed on the northern exit to Highway 92 by the Outback. If they do not want to install a barrier, then put up a sign which prohibits left turns from the south lane and paint an arrow on the ground showing only a right turn.

I was just wondering why there were no entries at the “YES” fair sponsored by SSVEC from Tombstone High School. I know that Mr. Wood the science teacher there used to require every student in his class to submit a project. And in past years his students have won many awards. I was shocked this year not to see any entries from the Tombstone schools.

If I were driving a new, maroon colored Nissan Murano with law enforcement plates, I think I would give some consideration to the example I was setting with my driving habits. Driving at 12-plus mph over the posted limit and tailgating sets a very poor example. It also tends to lead people to believe that the license plates grant “immunity from being stopped”, which most of us believe, but wish weren’t true. Those license plates do not put the owners above the law. In fact, they call attention to the vehicle and the operator’s behavior. Perhaps a switch to regular license plates is easier than displaying proper driving habits.

Those commenting about the West Gate closure come across as “let them eat cake” referring to military attitudes of civilians wanting to have that gate remain open. The attitude from the soldiers on post seems to be “we are the military, there’s a war on, and we don’t care what civilians want”. Is this the reason most of the drivers exceeding the speed limit on the Highway 90 bypass and Highway 90 through Huachuca City are military and they are on a mission and don’t care what civilians think? Or is this why early mornings at the main gate soldiers in automobiles can be seen blocking the intersection of Fry Boulevard and Buffalo Soldier Trail as well as Wilcox and Buffalo Soldier Trail, because they are on a mission and do not care for us civilians? When I was a soldier and young once I learned to obey civilian and military laws. However, those calling about the library closing on post scream louder than the civilians wanting the gate open. Screaming like it’s the end of their little world. Sorry folks, but big bucks are being spent on Bush’s little war in Iraq and Afghanistan so there is no money left over for your library, nor to cut your grass up on post. Let the soldiers cut the grass and pick up the trash on post. And I do not know if I should apologize or not, but I do not support troops who don’t give a hoot what us civilians want, nor do I support troops that do not obey the law.
