Sabino, who defeated Buena in a dual meet Wednesday, won the boys meet last year, with Salpointe Catholic second and Nogales third.
Flowing Wells took the girls’ meet, followed by Tucson High and Rincon. Both Sabino and Flowing Wells will return to defend their titles this year and both could be meet contenders again.
Other teams considered to vie for top finishes include host Douglas, Ironwood Ridge, Tucson High and Buena in the boys meet and Tucson High, Ironwood Ridge and Salpointe Catholic in the girls portion of the meet.
The Buena boys placed fifth in last year’s meet with 35 points. The Bisbee boys were 12th with eight points and Tombstone’s boys 13th with five points.
The Buena girls were 10th with nine points. Tombstone was 13th with six points and Bisbee was last with only one point.
Buena coaches Tate Dunham and Regina Moffett held most of their better athletes out of Wednesday’s dual meet with Sabino with hopes that the extra few days of rest will have them better prepared for today’s meet.
The Buena boys are expected to be strong in the sprints with the likes of Marcus Hall and Fred Livingston, as well as in the distance events with Eric Harasyn, Stephen Bostwick and Justin Austin leading the way. Buena should also score well in all three relays.
Hall and Livingston could also give the Colts points in the jumps.
The Buena girls will be led by sprinters Alexis Powers and Maddisyn Blue. Alesia Ash should score in the jumps. Brittany Hollabaugh is expected to make her first appearance of the season in the discus and shot put and could pick up points in both events.
Michelle Crowley has a shot at scoring in the 300-meter hurdles. Also, look for all three Buena relay teams to place in the top six.
Bisbee will rely on distance runners Prido Polanco and Raymundo Navarette and sprinters John Taylor and Matt Metli. Bisbee could also score in the relay events.
The Lady Pumas will look to distance runner Anais Cordova and jumper Natasha Testa for their points.
Tombstone’s Jaqi Bell should give the Yellowjackets points in both the discus and shot put, while Jess Ann Robison should score in the long jump and triple jump. Amanda Fuller could score in the pole vault.
As for the boys, Thomas Smith could lead the Yellowjackets in the sprints and Cody Rosengarten could be the Jackets top distance prospect.
Medals will go to the top six place finishers in each event, trophies for the individual and team relay champions, the meet champion and runner ups.
There will also be plaques presented to the Outstanding Male and Female track athlete and field event performers.
Cost for admission to the meet is $4. A concession stand will be open and T-shirts ranging from $14-$20 will be available for sale.
