Veteran geologist Bill Burton will talk on mineral exploration in Arizona at the March Sunsites Gem and Mineral Club meeting, slated for 8 p.m. Monday at the Sunsites Community Center on Treasure Road. The public is invited. Burton earned his bachelor’s degree at the University of Washington and his master’s at UCLA. He did mineral exploration for 35 years with Cypress Minerals, much of which was targeting deposits of copper and gold in Arizona. He will give an overview of how a geologist looks at a potential mine from several different levels, examining the geology of the region and district, as well as the specific property and its mineralization. He will relate some of his adventures in Arizona, as well as describe some of the geological features and mines of Cochise County.

Sierra Vista

There will not be a Sierra Vista Farmers Market today. The next market will be held April 5 from noon to 4 p.m. Meet local farmers and ranchers, and take home some of the bounty of Cochise County. The Cochise Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society meets at 2 p.m. on the second Thursday of the month at the Ethel Berger Center. Call 458-3889.

The Sierra Vista Regional Health Center will have a “Scrub Sale” from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, in the Jenny Room, to benefit the Auxiliary Scholarship Fund. Many items will be on sale including lab coats, blood pressure cuffs, stethoscopes, warmups, shoes and accessories. Call 459-1724.

VFW Post 9972 Ladies Auxiliary invites the community to attend the auxiliary’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Dinner on Friday, from 5 to 7 p.m. The menu includes corned beef and cabbage. The cost is $7 for members and nonmembers. The post is located at 549 Veterans Drive. Call 458-9972.

There will be a Veterans Supermarket of Services Benefits Expo from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Buena High School. The Huachuca Astronomy Club of Southeastern Arizona, in collaboration with Cochise College, will hold a “Star Party” on Saturday. The public is invited. It will be at the Junk Bond Observatory on Madera Road off of Moson Road. The party will start at dusk or about a half-hour before sunset and is dependent on the weather. Vendor applications are now being taken for the second annual West End Block Party, which will take place from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on April 21 in the historic side of Sierra Vista, on Fry Boulevard from Garden Avenue to North Street. Events will include live entertainment, arts and crafts, a free Kiddie Land, farmers market, Tombstone Vigilantes, clowns, a street dance from 6 to 10 p.m. and much more entertainment, plus lots of food. Last year’s event was such a success that more vendors are expected to participate this year. The Huachuca Area Republican Women will meet Monday at the Windemere Hotel and Convention Center. There will be coffee and conversation at 10:30 a.m. and the meeting starts at 11. The Arizona Archaeological Society-Cochise Chapter will hold its monthy meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Room 900 in the Library Building of Cochise College, 901 N. Columbo Ave. Alan Dart, founder and executive director of Olde Pueblo Archaeology, will present “Arts and Culture of the Ancient Hohokam Indian.” The event is free to the public. Join docents from the Friends of the San Pedro River on a hike to the Spanish presidio of Santa Cruz de Terrenate on Saturday. This hike will start at 9 a.m. at the ghost town of Fairbank and cross the river to the presidio. The hike is moderately difficult and you should be prepared to get your feet wet. The cost is $5 per person, with proceeds going to benefit educational programs of the Friends of the San Pedro River. Call 459-8146.

The regular monthly meeting of the Civics Issues Forum will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Sierra Vista Public Library conference room. The subject is population growth and immigration, focusing on the impacts of rapid growth, primarily from illegal immigration, and its impacts on the environment, education, employment, health care and the social fabric of the United States. The Friends of the Sierra Vista Public Library will host an event featuring author Neville W. Cramer at 1:30 p.m. on March 17 in the library’s Mona Bishop Room. Cramer is a retired Immigration and Naturalization Service special agent who has written the book “Fixing the INSanity: America’s Immigration Crisis.” In the book, he describes the problem America faces and common-sense solutions to it.

The eighth annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade will start at 11 a.m. on March 17. The entries will line up at 10 a.m. at the corner of Seventh Street and Fry Boulevard. The Fort Huachuca Retiree Council meets at 10 a.m. on the first Friday of each month in the Jack Rabbit Room of the Murr Community Center on Fort Huachuca. Coffee call is at 9:30 a.m. The Retiree Council serves the 4,800 military retirees in Cochise County and other military retirees throughout Arizona by reporting useful information each month. The Volunteer Interfaith Caregiver Program (VICaP) is a non-profit organization providing services to the elderly, disabled and homebound residents of Sierra Vista and nearby rural communities. Services include transportation to appointments, shopping assistance, friendly visiting, basic business help, respite sitting, Medicare insurance counseling and minor home maintenance. These services are provided free of charge by trained volunteers; however, donations are accepted. In response to increased demand for services, VICaP is recruiting volunteers who are willing to give a few hours of their week to reach out and help their neighbors. Call 459-8146.

The Cochise County chapter of AXPOWs meets on the third Saturday of the month, at the Elks club on Wilcox Drive. The meeting starts at 2 p.m. Anyone who was a prisoner of war, whether a war or conflict, and his family is eligible to join the organization. Call Milton M. Moore, commander, at 459-7295.

All caregivers are invited to attend a series of training sessions presented by Melinda Haun, a registered nurse and a certified hospice and palliative nurse. The classes are simple, practical, positive and empowering, and are designed to take the fear out of caregiving. The Sierra Vista Farmers Market is open on the first Thursday of each month during winter. The market is located at the northwest corner of Wilcox Drive and Carmichael Avenue next to The Palms, 255 W. Wilcox Drive. The winter schedule will have earlier hours, running from noon to 4 p.m. There are lots of unsprayed produce, healthy meats, farm eggs and wild fish, desert health foods, honey, fair-trade coffee, pickles and preserves, baked goods, herbal remedies and healthy body care. There will be a tour of historic Buffalo Soldier sites on Fort Huachuca every third Saturday of the month for the remainder of the year. The tours will be led by members of the Southwest Association of Buffalo Soldiers in celebration of the post’s designation of 2007 as “The Year of the Buffalo Soldier.”

The Huachuca Audubon Society leads a two- to three-hour bird walk Monday at The Nature Conservancy’s Ramsey Canyon Preserve. Meet at the Ramsey Canyon Preserve parking lot, located at the upper end of Ramsey Canyon Road, starting at 8 a.m. in March, and 7:30 a.m. during April and August. The walk will go about a mile up through the preserve at a relaxed pace. There is some uphill walking, and sturdy shoes are recommended. The walk is free and open to the public, but standard preserve entrance fees apply: $5/person for a weekly pass, $3 Nature Conservancy members and Cochise County residents, $25 for a yearly family pass. Cochise Chordsmen Barbershop Singers, which is Sierra Vista’s chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, meets and practices each Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in the choir room of the United Methodist Church, locate at the corner of Buffalo Soldier Trail and St. Andrews Drive. There is a free spay/neuter program available for low-income cat owners in Cochise County, thanks to funding provided by the Cochise Community Foundation and the Cochise County Humane Society. Spaying and neutering is needed for helping to reduce feline overpopulation. Call 803-7385.

Huachuca Audubon Society will recycle your old ink jet and laser printer cartridges, as well as old cell phones. It’s been estimated that 400 million cartridges are destined for landfills every year. Instead of trashing your cartridges and cell phones, drop them off at any Huachuca Audubon Society meeting or field trip; or at the San Pedro House, the Nature Conservancy’s Ramsey Canyon Preserve or Wild Birds Unlimited on Highway 92. The Winter Visitors Program on Wednesday will feature “Drug Overview” by Detective Stompro of the Sierra Vista Police Department. The group meets at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 2145 S. Coronado Drive. Wednesday’s program will be highlights of the 2007 Quilt show. An evening group meets on the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. Programs, workshops, quilting bees and and fellowship.
