Huachuca City

The Huachuca City Lions Club will have an all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Lions Hall, 125 Huachuca Blvd. The cost is $4.50 for adults, $2.50 for children 5-12, and free for kid 4 and under. Dessert, coffee and tea are included. The public is welcome.

Bisbee

Bisbee Corral of Westerners International will feature a program about preservation of Southern Arizona’s elegant historical showplace, the Grand Theater in Douglas, at 7 p.m. today at the Bisbee Senior Center. Westerners is an organization whose members enjoy history of the American West. Bisbee Corral holds monthly meetings that feature topics related to Southeastern Arizona and the surrounding region. Double Adobe

The Double Adobe Country Quilters will hold their 27th annual Quilt and Crafts Show from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday at the Old Double Adobe School on Central Highway and Double Adobe Road in downtown Double Adobe. Admission is free. Children are welcome, and live music will be performed by the Sulphur Strings. The Double Adobe 4-H will be serving lunch. Sierra Vista

The Sierra Vista Farmers Market is open on the first Thursday of each month during winter. The market is located at the northwest corner of Wilcox Drive and Carmichael Avenue next to The Palms, 255 W. Wilcox Drive. The winter schedule will have earlier hours, running from noon to 4 p.m. There are lots of unsprayed produce, healthy meats, farm eggs and wild fish, desert health foods, honey, fair-trade coffee, pickles and preserves, baked goods, herbal remedies and healthy body care. The Huachuca Audubon Society leads a two- to three-hour bird walk Mondays at The Nature Conservancy’s Ramsey Canyon Preserve. Meet at the Ramsey Canyon Preserve parking lot, located at the upper end of Ramsey Canyon Road, starting at 8 a.m. during March and 7:30 a.m. April through August. The walk will go about a mile up through the preserve at a relaxed pace. There is some uphill walking, and sturdy shoes are recommended. The walk is free and open to the public, but standard preserve entrance fees apply: $5/person for a weekly pass, $3 Nature Conservancy members and Cochise County residents, $25 for a yearly family pass. There will be a free bird walk at 8 a.m. Sunday at the Sierra Vista Environmental Operations Park. Walks are limited to the first 20 attendees. Call 432-1388.

Docents from the Friends of the San Pedro River will lead an interpretive walk along the river beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday. The walk departs from the San Pedro House. There is no charge for the walks, but donations are accepted to support the docent programs. Dress appropriately for the weather, bring drinking water and use sun protection. A columnist from the Wall Street Journal and the president of the state Senate are scheduled guest speakers at the Cochise County Republican Party’s upcoming Lincoln Day Dinner. The dinner is March 10, with a social at 5:30 p.m., dinner at 6 p.m. and guest speakers at 7 p.m. It will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 156 W. Kayetan Drive. The guest speakers will be John Fund, columnist and TV commentator, and Sen. Tim Bee, whose district includes the Sierra Vista area. The event costs $30 per person. The eighth annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade will start at 11 a.m. on March 17. The entries will line up at 10 a.m. at the corner of Seventh Street and Fry Boulevard. The route will go down Fry Boulevard, starting at Seventh Street and finishing at the entrance of Veterans’ Memorial Park. The Sierra Vista chapter of The Compassionate Friends, an international nonprofit self-help support group for families following the death of a child of any age, will meet from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Mountain View Assembly of God annex on Colombo Avenue and Highway 92. Meetings are open to all adult members of families who have experienced the death of a child at any age, from any cause, no matter how long ago. The Cochise County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue team will hold its monthly meeting on Thursday at the Emergency Operations Building on Foothills and Highway 92. The Fort Huachuca Retiree Council meets at 10 a.m. on the first Friday of each month in the Jack Rabbit Room of the Murr Community Center on Fort Huachuca. Coffee call is at 9:30 a.m. The Retiree Council serves the 4,800 military retirees in Cochise County and other military retirees throughout Arizona by reporting useful information each month. The Huachuca Astronomy Club of Southeastern Arizona, in collaboration with Cochise College, will host Adam Block, an astro-imager at its March general meeting at Cochise College on Saturday. Starting in 1995, Block developed and crafted the nightly observing program at the Kitt Peak National Observatory. His imagery has been published in “Arizona Highways,” “Astronomy,” “Sky and Telescope” and a number of books. The meeting will be held in Room 305A/B on the Sierra Vista campus of Cochise College. The room is adjacent to the campus security office. The program begins at 7 p.m., the public is welcome and the program is free. Attend the “Get Smart with Smart Irrigation Controllers” workshop at the University of Arizona South, 1140 N. Colombo Ave., from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday. The Volunteer Interfaith Caregiver Program (VICaP) is a non-profit organization providing services to the elderly, disabled and homebound residents of Sierra Vista and nearby rural communities. Services include transportation to appointments, shopping assistance, friendly visiting, basic business help, respite sitting, Medicare insurance counseling and minor home maintenance. These services are provided free of charge by trained volunteers; however, donations are accepted. In response to increased demand for services, VICaP is recruiting volunteers who are willing to give a few hours of their week to reach out and help their neighbors. Call 459-8146.

The Cochise County chapter of AXPOWs meets on the third Saturday of the month, at the Elks club on Wilcox Drive. There will be a tour of historic Buffalo Soldier sites on Fort Huachuca every third Saturday of the month for the remainder of the year. The tours will be led by members of the Southwest Association of Buffalo Soldiers in celebration of the post’s designation of 2007 as “The Year of the Buffalo Soldier.” Also, the post is extending a special invitation to any private organizations with a Buffalo Soldier connection to attend the kickoff event on Feb. 23. All caregivers are invited to attend a series of training sessions presented by Melinda Haun, a registered nurse and a certified hospice and palliative nurse. The classes are simple, practical, positive and empowering, and are designed to take the fear out of caregiving. Cochise Chordsmen Barbershop Singers, which is Sierra Vista’s chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, meets and practices each Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in the choir room of the United Methodist Church, locate at the corner of Buffalo Soldier Trail and St. Andrews Drive. The Mountain Vista Golden K Kiwanis Club of Sierra Vista meets twice a month, on the second and fourth Thursdays, at the Windemere Hotel and Conference Center, located at 2047 S Highway 92 in Sierra Vista. The Cochise County Democratic Party has announced the hours of operations for the Cochise County Democratic Party headquarters, located at 1010 E. Fry Blvd. The office phone number is 458-9467. Regular office hours are Tuesdays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Wednesdays 4 to 7 p.m.; and Thursdays and Fridays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Voter information and registration forms are available. The Sierra Vista Environmental Operations Park has bird walks each Sunday morning, starting at 8 a.m. The walks take about two hours and are led by docents from Southeastern Arizona Bird Observatory, Huachuca Audubon Society and the Friends of the San Pedro River. The entrance is located on Highway 90, between mileage markers 324 and 325, on the north side of the highway. Walks are limited to the first 20 who attend. Call 432-1388.
