SIERRA VISTA — Writers might be interested in an upcoming annual writing contest and conference.
The Cochise Community Creative Writing Celebration, an event that gives unpublished authors a chance to shine, is fast approaching. The ninth annual event, set for March 30 and 31, allows conference attendees to participate by submitting entries for a writing contest in the areas of poetry, short story and non-fiction.
The deadline to submit entries for the contest, which is open to anyone who registers for the writing celebration, is Feb. 23. Cash prizes will be awarded on the final day of the event, and winning works will appear in the 2008 edition of “The Mirage,” Cochise College’s art and literary magazine.
The conference will feature poet William Pitt Root, a three-time winner of the Pushcart Prize and a Pulitzer nominee, as its keynote presenter.

Root, a former post-graduate fellow at Stanford and Tucson’s first poet laureate, has written nine books, including “The Storm and Other Poems,” “Faultdancing,” “Invisible Guests” and “Reasons for Going it on Foot.” His poems appear in more than 100 anthologies and literary magazines, including The New Yorker, Atlantic Monthly, The Nation, Harpers, Poetry and The American Poetry Review.
His works have been translated into nearly 20 languages and broadcast on Radio Free Europe and Liberty Radio. Root has received grants from the Guggenheim and Rockefeller Foundations and the National Endowment for the Arts. He also was awarded three Pushcart Prizes and the Kunitz Poetry Prize.
The celebration is co-sponsored by Cochise College, the University of Arizona South, and Sierra Vista Parks & Leisure Services.
