SIERRA VISTA — As the area continues to grow, physician recruitment and retention have become the health care community’s greatest challenges.
Recognizing Sierra Vista’s increasing demand for expanded medical care, two surgeons have relocated to this area and in December opened the Arizona Surgical Clinic at 4900 E. Mediterranean Drive, Suite B in the Ventana Corporate Center east of town, off Fry Boulevard.
Both surgeons, Dr. Elias Nasr and Dr. Alberto Dominguez, said they look forward to serving the community and are confident physicians and patients will benefit from their surgical expertise.

Nasr brings more than 25 years experience to the area, specializing in general surgical oncology and laparoscopic surgical procedures.
A graduate of University of Tours Medical School in France, Nasr completed two surgical internships, one at the Le Mans Regional Hospital in France and one at the Presbyterian University of Pennsylvania Medical Center in Philadelphia.
Following a yearlong residency in surgical oncology at the Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, Nasr served as a senior and chief resident of general surgery at the Muhlenberg Hospital, an affiliate of Rutgers Medical School in Plainfield, N.J.
Prior to relocating to Sierra Vista, Nasr was chief of surgery at Sebastian River Medical Center in Florida and, most recently, the chief of surgery and associate medical director in charge of surgical affairs at the Hospital Center of North Lebanon.
Nasr moved to the area early in December and says he’s found the people “very welcoming and down to earth.”
Originally from Lebanon, Nasr is an American citizen and has spent most of his professional life in this country. He and his wife, Therese, have three children. Their two oldest, Michael and Misha are grown and live in Florida, while the youngest, Marc, is a student at Buena High School.
Elias and Therese Nasr enjoy working out and hiking and are particularly fond of the mountain vistas that surround the Sierra Vista area.
“The weather and mountains were a big attraction for us,” the doctor said. “It’s a beautiful area for people who enjoy the outdoors and hiking. And this is obviously a fast growing community, very much in need of surgeons.”
Nasr said he expects to stay in this area for at least the next 10 years, serving the community’s growing medical needs.
Certified by the American Board of Surgery after completing his residency at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock, Dominguez is a general surgeon. He earned his medical degree with honors in 1996 following attendance at the medical faculties of the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon in Monterrey, Mexico, and the Ruprecht-Karls Universitat in Heidelberg, Germany.
Most recently, Dominguez served as fellow in thoracic surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. His practice encompasses all areas of general surgery, including thyroid, parathyroid, pulmonary, esophageal and gastrointestinal, as well as such minimally invasive procedures as laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication, laparoscopic hernia repair and video assisted thoracic surgery.
Fully bilingual in English and Spanish, Dominguez’s introduction to the medical field started as a translator for visiting medical doctors in Mexico.
“That is what started my calling,” Dominguez said. “I thought the work they were doing was both fascinating and rewarding and decided I wanted to study to be a doctor.”
Once he becomes more established in this area, Dominguez hopes to extend his services into Douglas and other areas of the county, as well as join doctors who venture into some of the depressed regions of Mexico where medical services are desperately needed.
“This area is perfect for my wife and I,” Dominguez said. “It’s close enough to my home in Mexico (Aguascalientes), the weather is wonderful and there is great opportunity here for a surgical practice to thrive.”
Alberto and Yolanda Dominguez have a 5-year old son, Carlos. Dominguez plans to start a regular running program, with a long-term goal of competing in a marathon.
