SIERRA VISTA — A female pedestrian who was likely an illegal immigrant was airlifted in unknown condition after being struck by a car as she crossed rush-hour traffic Friday evening on Highway 92, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
In front of Delio’s Italian Restaurant, near the intersection of Canyon de Flores and Highway 92, a woman ran westbound across traffic and was struck by a northbound vehicle about 4:14 p.m., DPS Officer Garland Copeland said.
Numerous eyewitnesses said the same.

The highway was closed to traffic in both directions for about 40 minutes. An AirEvac emergency medical helicopter transported the woman to the trauma center at University Medical Center in Tucson.
The woman suffered extremely severe head, hip and internal injuries, Copeland said. U.S. Border Patrol was being contacted because police on the scene suspected the victim to be an illegal immigrant, he added.
She was evidently traveling alone on foot, with no personal belongings or identification, the officer said.
