MIDLAND, Texas — The Cochise College men’s basketball team, with few returning players from last season’s ACCAC championship team, went into its season opener Friday, hoping only to compete well against the nation’s preseason No. 1 ranked junior college team.
But playing against Midland JC on its home court, the Apaches did more than keep their heads above water.
With seven minutes to play, they held a one-point lead, only to succumb to Midland’s strength and size in the paint and lose, 82-72.

“We couldn’t shut the door on them,” Cochise head
coach Jerry Carrillo said. “But we’re going to be good. We came out really strong and defended well.”
Nemanja Calasan, the 6-foot-8, 240-pound, first-team All-American from Serbia, had 20 points for the Chapparals on 10-of-12 shooting from the field.
Surprisingly, he was in the minority of Midland players who didn’t score from the line, as the Chapparals shot 42 free-throws, aided in large measure by 15 offensive rebounds.
Cochise was led in scoring by one of two sophomores who saw significant playing time on last year’s team which climbed to as high as No. 3 in the national rankings. Frank Borden from Anthony, N.M. scored 27 points. Freshman Dynile Forbes, who came to the Apaches from Freeport, The Bahamas, had 13 and sophomore A.J. Adkins chipped in 12.
Today at 3 p.m. in Midland, the Apaches look for their first win of the season against the Lubbock Christian University junior varsity.
