One of the political races that sometimes is lost in the election shuffle is for the Arizona Corporation Commission.
But this race can be just as important as any that is decided next Tuesday.
The commission regulates public utilities. But it also facilitates incorporation of businesses and organizations, securities regulation and railroad/pipeline safety. And beyond its executive capacity, the five-member commission can adopt rules and regulations, as well as sit as a tribunal and make decisions in contested matters.
The commission has become well-known in the Sierra Vista area because of the issues the last few years regarding the McLain water companies.

Five people are running for two open seats on the commission. Included in this mix is a local resident, Richard Boyer.
When you go to vote, we encourage you to think about two things about this commission. First, think which candidates would be good for the rural areas of the state of Arizona. Second, think who might be best to investigate and get answers about requests made before the commission.
In this case, we believe Boyer, a lawyer and former judge and state senator, and Kris Mayes, a Prescott native with a law degree, are the best two candidates.
Boyer understands the local issues. He’ll think local. And we believe he’s one to investigate issues and stand for what he believes is right.
Through the McLain situation, Mayes has shown that she hasn’t forgotten about southeast Arizona. She’s been one to keep on top of the issues surrounding that situation. She’s also shown a willingness to investigate and not take things at face value.
The commission plays a critical role in our state, so take this vote seriously. We need people who are going to be good advocates for the people of Arizona.
