SIERRA VISTA — How long does it take to give away $2.9 million in scholarships?
If it’s at Buena High School on Monday night, the answer is well over two hours as approximately 200 graduating seniors received a broad range of awards for a broad range of achievement.

Student body president Katherine Hicks led the audience in the pledge of allegiance, followed by a parade of more than 50 presenters, representing universities, colleges, businesses, civic, fraternal, professional and political organizations from across the county and the state.
Two Buena seniors, Casey Astrup and Joseph Schafer, received full scholarships to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point from Capt. Cornelius Nash, who said each award is worth approximately $320,000. Students were recognized for their accomplishments in fields as diverse as music, mathematics, science, volunteerism, dramatics, athletics, dance, citizenship and leadership.
The University of Arizona made awards to 39 Buena grads, Northern Arizona University presented $164,000 in scholarships to 16 students, and Arizona State awarded scholarships to eight members of the class of 2006.
Jeff Savage of Eastern Arizona College in Thatcher presented full tuition awards to 10 Buena students Monday night, telling the crowd, “We usually have anywhere from five to 15 Buena grads coming to our school every year and they contribute a lot. It’s a pleasure to be back. There’s something good about what you do and what happens here in Sierra Vista.”
