BISBEE — La Vuelta de Bisbee bicycle races this weekend likely will provide a boost to Bisbee’s tourism.
Al Hopper, who is in charge of the four races, said there will be 236 bikers competing in at least one of the events.
With so many contestants, there will be some impact to Bisbee’s businesses, he said. He is assuming most will stay at a Bisbee hotel or a bed and breakfast.

“There will be two nights of lodging, and of course there will be meals during that time,” Hopper said.
An average rider will spend close to $150 during the two-day event, Hopper said. He estimated that Bisbee businesses will benefit to the tune of $25,000 to $35,000 this weekend, which would not include the entry fees that he charges to cover his expenses.
He also said he employs local people to help out with the four races.
The La Vuelta De Bisbee originated in 1976, and former resident John Timbers was the one who started the event.
Interim Tourism Director Donna Harris said she was not sure what the event would bring to Bisbee in funds, but added there would be some impact.
There will be a lot of contestants who will stay in homes of friends, as well as motels and hotels, she said.
The event draws people from other states, as well as Phoenix and Tucson.
She said Bisbee’s tourism starts to decline in late April, so this event helps businesses to some extent.
“It brings people here for three days,” she said. “It is the beginning of our slow time.”
She said the races would not have that much of an impact on nearby communities such as Sierra Vista or Tombstone, adding that people coming to Bisbee for the bicycle races would have to come through one of those locations.
“The people who are in the race will bring their families and friends to watch the race,” Harris said. “It adds excitement to Bisbee.”
